The CRP on borers has been formulated with the following objectives:

  • To develop bio-systematic keys, barcodes and geo-maps for emerging borer species complex across India.
  • To study the field ecological processes to develop effective forecasting models for timing management interventions.
  • To study the diagnostic symptomatology, secondary pathogens and yield loss
  • To decipher and shortlist olfactory/ photo cues and natural enemies for commercially viable management
  • To appropriate IIHR’s sealer-cum-healer to different tree crops like mango, citrus, coffee, guava, cashew etc.
  • To harmoniously blend the above information into viable and pollution-free management strategies for area wide low cost intervention.

Recognising the gravity of borer problem, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has sanctioned an exclusive Consortium Research Platform on Borers in Network mode with a total financial outlay of Rs. 23.75 crores in the twelfth plan period to address basic as well as applied aspects by involving different institutes and universities across the country and evolve safe and sustainable management strategies. Under this project, concerted efforts will be made to evolve strategies to significantly bring down economic losses caused by borers. Considering the magnitude of monetary losses caused by borers, even a 1% reduction could translate into saving crores of rupees.
